Started in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level extension is the single TLD intended for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to obtain john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domains remained running.

There are no particular conditions on who can buy a dot NAME domain, but in order to keep the idea behind its establishment alive, the .NAME Registry may check who the Registrant is and if there is no link between the owner and the actual domain name, the registration could be challenged.
